After elementary school, it seems like Columbus Day is a holiday that loses its sparkle and fun. I still have fond memories of poorly-constructed dioramas and models of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, though. Thanks to that poem ("In fourteen hundred ninety two/Columbus sailed the ocean blue") I will also never forget the date of Columbus' infamous voyage. Lessons were filled with harrowing stories of survival by the ship's crew, and the date also marked a point very close to one of my favorite holidays: Thanksgiving. Students celebrating the holiday this year, however, may have an altogether different experience than I once had.

Despite instructions from the Department of Education to supplement current funding for schools and colleges, some states have used the stimulus money to plug up holes in the budget where education funding has been cut. These "shell games" have caused the department to closely look at how states are spending stimulus funds, and will inevitably spark another debate about how much control the federal government should have over states and their educational systems.

In a plan introduced today, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan showed how he plans on using some of the funds given to him as part of the stimulus plan. Non-profit organizations and school districts will be able to apply for federal education grants, but will first need to partner with a private-sector organization or philanthropic group that pledges to provide a matching donation of 20% of the grant's total.

In recent weeks, the Obama administration has driven home a very important point: education reform cannot wait. Granted, the same is being said of reform on Wall Street and in health care, but the significance of such a statement cannot be diminished by using the same old rhetoric. Education reform is important, and even more so following the ill-conceived No Child Left Behind Act. Accountability is critical for success in our schools, but that plan crippled schools in which the funding did not follow the mandates. That was especially true in states already facing fiscal crises in the early 2000s, and in states like Ohio, where funding for local school districts has been clearly defined as unconstitutional and broken for decades.

This is my obligatory first posting; if you've stumbled across this site and are wondering what its purpose is, I'll just briefly summarize it for you. The beauty of the Internet is that it offers multiple opportunities for creative expression. Sites like YouTube and deviantART offer their users a chance to create video-blogs and art, whereas the music industry has found an infinite number of amateur musicians who first break into the world via Internet communities. For someone with a fear of cameras, an inability to draw even a simple stick figure, and less than 2 hours worth of experience playing a guitar, a free Wordpress blog is heaven. I've used Twitter for almost a year (@coryroush) but sometimes, 140 characters just isn't enough to express your thoughts on a topic as in-depth and interesting as the United States' plans for our nation's education system!
